Alexander Kutovoi: Bulky Biceps Trying To Fly

Bulky Biceps Trying To Fly is a project which presents sculptures of ancient characters, which the artist adapted to function as sports equipment.

Alexander Kutovoi presents the sculpture of Pegasus, which is in fact a gymnastics horse, as well as the heads of ancient deities Aphrodite and Hypnos, which he turned into weights for lifting exercises. The objects we perceive as «Art world’s gold fund» have acquired function to fit into modern trends of maintaining health, enthusiasm for sports and attention to one’s own body.

Unquestionably, running the risk of oversimplification, Bulky Biceps can be seen as classical art with a modern twist. Classical sculptures are remodeled (and literally cut and reduced) to accommodate the needs of the modern man who need the gym as a validation of his social status, rather than just for health issues
